Notes on Werewolves

What is a werewolf?
The werewolf is an ancient and mysterious creature that has the special ability to harness their inner beast. In other words, they have the power to transform from man into animal. Common myth explains that these creatures are monsters; deadly predators that gruesomely shift within the light of the full moon to wreak havoc upon innocent mortals. However, Hollywood is often false or misleading at best. The true werewolf is much different than what the horror movies portray.
Basic Anatomy
Werewolves have three forms. Human, Werewolf, and Wolf. In human form, they can easily blend in with people and are hard to detect… if you don’t know what you’re looking for. There are a few differences that make a werewolf detectable in their human bodies. First to note is the most obvious: how they move. In any form, werewolves have senses, strengths, and attributes far beyond man or wolf. Even in their less powerful forms, they are very agile, strong, and graceful. Some werewolves can easily over power the amount of humans on one hand and some can take on more. They can jump higher, run faster, and move more than any human could.
Another few traits to watch out for are their more physical features… i.e. their eyes, ears, teeth, nails, and just their general appearance. Werewolves, no matter what, have pointed ears in human form. However, the strength of the point heavily varies from just a little bump to almost looking elfish. Also, if you believe someone you know is a werewolf, look at their smile. Are some of their teeth sharper than normal? A very common trait among these creatures is that in their human bodies their canines and incisors are slightly longer and sharper than normal. They usually aren’t obvious, but depending on the werewolf it varies. Finally, their nails aren’t always long and sharp. Although nails are probably the least obvious trait one would notice, are they slightly curved? Stronger than normal? Sharp even though they’re short? These are a few good signs to look for. However, any of those qualities can be just as normal for humans as for werewolves. Be careful.
When werewolves shift into their larger, more anthromorphic type form (just called their Werewolf form), they are essentially very large bipedal wolves. Their fur ranges from brown, to russet, to white, to grey, to black, and everything in between. Unlike natural wolves however, their eyes can be almost any realistic color of any living species. i.e. Werewolves can have blue eyes in all forms. The color of their fur generally matches their hair color, as well as their eyes. However, the hair/pelt color can change in a different form as well as their eye color.
This is the most powerful form of the werewolf. Muscle is etched into almost every square inch of this beast, with incredible senses and human intelligence. Unfortunately, though, this form is one of the hardest to be fully agile in compared to others of the same species. This is their most common form besides their human form if they’re living in an area populated area, or their wolf form if they’re in the wild. Although this body is extremely strong, fast, and built for hunting, there are some limitations. For example, their ‘paws’ are a combination of a human hand and a wolf’s paw. The fingers are thick with long curved claws on the end and small paw pads on the palm and fingers. Thinner than in their wolf form, it is still difficult to handle delicate objects and tasks with them. Werewolves can also walk on two legs or run on all four of them.
Finally, the basic wolf. Probably one of the hardest forms to master shifting into, it is also one of the least useful. Mostly for hiding and winding through tight areas, the completely quad beast looks exactly like the bipedal version in terms of physical attributes, pelt color, eye color, and human intelligence. They also retain their human voice, which is possible in every form. Basic wolf forms are much larger than ordinary wolves, and also a bit stronger.
Transformation
Contrary to popular belief, the full moon has no effect on the urges to shift of a werewolf. This legend came from when these creatures were being hunted by man out of fear, and had to change the times in which they could hunt. Now limiting their hours to the night instead of day, werewolves had to rely on the light of the moon to guide them for they cannot see well in the dark. This made it easy to see werewolves for man, and some consider it to be the only way to find one. Over the centuries, this grew into legend.
Depending on the form to change into, transformations are short, almost painless, and rarely gruesome like in the movies. From human to werewolf, it takes on average 10-30 seconds to completely shift. This process is almost painless, though the individual may occasionally feel aches and pains from the changing. The more a werewolf transforms, the quicker and easier it is for it allows flexibility in the body and mind.
Transformation relies on a hormone that is activated by the gene in their body that makes them a werewolf. This special hormone resides in their blood, saliva, hair, and brain. During shifting, the brain activates this hormone throughout the bloodstream, allowing the individual to shift. Adrenaline is also a major chemical that courses through their entire body, among others, to get them ready for battle, the hunt, or to make the transformation painless as the entire body grows and changes.
Each form varies in length. From human to werewolf, it is as previously stated, 10-30 seconds. From human to wolf, if it is mastered, only takes 2-5 seconds. From werewolf to human, 5-10 seconds and from wolf to human it is a similar amount of time. Regardless of the length of time, a werewolf must be careful where and when it shifts, for they are vulnerable while changing. In order for someone born as a human to become a werewolf, there are a few ways. The first, and most famous, is the classic bite. The easiest to preform but not the most successful, the bite or claws of a werewolf carry the hormone to shift, and therefore the gene. It directly puts it in the bloodstream and it takes a good few minutes to take effect, if at all. The second is a blood transfusion. Mixing a werewolf’s and human’s blood is one of the most successful ways to achieve transformation. However, it is one of the most difficult. Finally, the blood line. If someone is in the blood line of a werewolf, there is a chance of becoming one depending on how many werewolves are in the family.
Curing lycanthropy is a difficult process but a possible one. However, it will only work if the werewolf wanting to be cured isn’t born into it. The chances of being cured from a blood line werewolf family are extremely small and most likely leads to death. Methods mainly consist of removing the gene from the blood. The most commonly practiced tradition is continuous, controlled bleeding. If the individual has been a werewolf for only a short amount of time, the procedure should be rather safe. This is why someone who is born with the hormone will most likely die of blood loss; the gene is so deeply rooted into their body it is impossible to get out. Another cure, although more difficult to find, is mixing the nectar of the rare wolfs bane flower, rose petals, and liquefied silver. This concoction is almost positive to kill, but it is the only guaranteed method of curing lycanthropy compared to the draining of blood.
Finally, transformation is at will and the moon has no effect. Some potions and mixtures can cause transformation against the werewolf’s will, but they are very difficult to make and the ingredients are hard to find.
Weaknesses
There is a trait that is fact among the hundreds of false claims of legend. Silver does affect a werewolf, and a silver bullet straight into the heart or brain will surely kill them. This metal’s effect on them is that they burn when in contact with flesh, and poison them if leaked into the body. However, it is possible for a werewolf to survive a silver bullet… provided the hunter knows more about how to kill one. If a silver bullet is fired and does not hit major vitals, the pain is horrible, but death is unlikely. If there are no more silver bullets left, or bullets at all, then it is time to use a silver weapon or any other weapon to destroy or remove the creatures major vitals.
